Task 2: Traffic Issue

Present Situation and Causes

1.   Every day there are traffic jams everywhere, causing great inconvenience to people’s daily lives.

2.   Too many cars running on the streets lead to air pollution and noise pollution.

3.   Innumerous traffic accidents occur, leading to injuries and deaths of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

4.   Without an efficient means of transport, people waste a great deal of time commuting. This makes them exhausted and less productive in their jobs.

5.   It is a great waste of natural resources, and perhaps leads to an energy crisis.

6.   There are more vehicles than the streets can accommodate.

7.   The streets are too old and narrow to meet the present need.

8.   The construction of new roads is very slow.

9.   There are few car parks, so the streets are made narrower by the vehicles parked along the roads.

10. The present situation is attributable partly to lax traffic rules and regulations.

11. Many drivers don’t obey regulations. People lack adequate awareness of the seriousness of traffic problems.

12. An expanding population and the influx of migrant workers account partly for the problem.

Solutions

1.   More and wider roads should be laid down to relieve traffic congestion.

2.   The government should accelerate the flow of traffic to lessen to crowding of the streets.

3.   More bus routes should be opened up; thus we can cut down the number of bikes and cars, and the roads will be cleaner and smoother.

4.   The government should build more underground railways, tunnels, and underpasses.

5.   The government should improve road conditions, and use a computer monitoring system.

6.   The government should issue stricter traffic laws and regulations, and impose more serve and harsher penalties on the violator.

7.   The government should raise the public’s awareness of the traffic regulations, popularize the education of traffic regulations, and improve the quality of the citizens.

8.   The government should reduce access to car parks and raise the expense of owning a private car, and levy higher taxes on car owners.

9.   The government should develop new forms of public transport, which are clean, energy-saving and space-saving.

10. Maximum and minimum speed limits should be imposed on all roads.

11. Good transport systems make a city cleaner, more efficient and more convenient.

12.   Better public transport systems, including buses, trains and subways, will encourage more people to use them rather than drive their own cars. This will reduce the total amount of traffic on the roads and make travel quicker for everyone.
