Task 2: Are stars, such as athletes and actors, overpaid?

 

Supporters of high payment may say…

 

1.   Those stars are talented people. They are the cream of the crop.

2.   Their brilliant performance enrich people’s cultural/spiritual life, which partly contributes to spiritual civilization.

3.   They bring great pleasure and happiness to ordinary people. They make money by means of their skills, and they deserve it. No one forces you to pay for his or her performance. Both are willing participants.

4.   Some of these stars also have undergone painstaking training and practice. No pain, no gain. The road to success may not be easy for most pop stars, which may set examples for the youngsters.

5.   Different occupations or professions can command a different amount of money.

6.   They sacrifice a lot for what they gain including privacy. They no longer have private lives; they are public property.

7.   It is an inevitable outcome of the market economy. We should not make a fuss of it. It is decided by the market.

8.   It is merely a matter of jealousy. If you are O.K., you cart also be a star who can earn millions of dollars. No one can stand in your way.

 

Opponents of high payment may say…

 

1.   We should value the talents of those who promote the welfare of the society as a whole rather than these pop stars.

2.   We can live without pop stars hut not without doctors or teachers. Our society can proceed well without these stars.

3.   The value of knowledge is depreciating.

4.   It discourages the initiative and zeal of people in other fields.

5.   It imposes an adverse influence on the development of the next generation, which may easily become money-oriented.

6.   This phenomenon, to some extent, even contaminates the order of the day.

7.   What they pay cannot equal their gain.

8.   They make little contribution to the development of society compared with scientists.

9.   With their quick-earned money, pop stars become vain and their souls may be distorted.
