Supporters of lengthy jail terms may say…
1. Whoever violates the law should undoubtedly be punished.
2. They can receive systematic and comprehensive reeducation and rehabilitation through labour under the supervision and guidance of the correction officers.

If we offer assistance and guidance when they are required to do some community service, they will realise that they are still a member of the society and that they are not looked down upon and discriminated against, and that they can still contribute their share to the development of society.
2. Give the wrongdoers a chance to correct their misconduct and start with a new slate. Some offenders are good in essence, but go astray under some negative influences.
