Notes

  • Ø  Kite flying is very popular in Taiwan, especially for small kids and primary school students. They have a kite flying competition in March when it is windy enough. When I was young, I enjoyed flying kites very much and once I made a kite by myself. It was in the shape of a butterfly. It took a whole day to finish making it. First I took some wooden sticks to make the frame of the kite. Then I used some paste to stick a bright picture of a butterfly on the frame. And then a beautiful kite was made. The kite was flying the way a butterfly flies in the sky. It was really a lot of fun.
  • Ø  In autumn, leaves turn yellow and red, and finally fall when the weather gets colder and colder. I often pick up fresh-falling leaves which are bright in colour to paste them together to make a picture. First of all, I draw the outline of the picture on a piece of paper, maybe a rabbit, a deer or a Christmas tree. Then I cut the leaves into small pieces to form a pretty pattern on the body of the rabbit or deer, or make a star on the top of Christmas tree. After that, I stick these pieces into the outline to form a nice picture. Finally, I clean up the picture and put it in a frame. You can find wonderful leaf pictures hanging on the wall of my home. Sometimes I even send some of my leaf pictures as birthday gifts to my friends. They always quite appreciate my work and cherish them very much.
  • Ø  When I was in my first year at college, I made a Chinese knot. Chinese knots were very popular at that time. It’s a kind of handicraft. It’s made of long red strands of string. I had got a guide book on how to make the knot. First, I put some needles into a piece of plastic to follow the pattern. Then I wound the strand around needles to follow the pictures as shown. And then, I took the strand out of the needles and pulled the strand tight. And that’s how the Chinese knot was made. It was unique, and because I made it myself, it had a special meaning.
  • Ø  I seldom made handicraft but this topic reminds me of a coloured egg I once made. When I was at school I had a handicraft class. The teacher asked us to make one. First I brought an egg and then I pricked a small hole at the top of the egg with a needle, Afterwards I pricked a big hole at another point of the egg with a knife. After that I blew the air into the small hole. The liquid flew out of the big hole. Then I used Chinese brushes to draw a picture of mountains, rivers and people on the surface of the egg.
