Describe where you would go if you were given the chance to travel anywhere in the world.
You should mention:
the reason for your choice
the things you would see there
the things you would to
and explain how it affects your life.
Notes
- Ø If I could go somewhere of my choice, I would choose a little island in the Pacific Ocean. I could get away from my usual environment and influences so as to think clearly about where I were to head. In spite of what others might think about me, I know I am not running away from something but to something. I want to get a clear break.
So once settled into my room on the little island of the Pacific Ocean, I could begin my process of self-change. I really could be anywhere as long as nobody could reach me by phone and I could have the peace and quiet to think about what I want to do. I would spend the mornings going for long walks on the beach and the afternoons sitting under my favourite tree, reading books and listening to CDs. Probably most important of all, I would force myself to get out of my room and go to meet people. Ordinarily shy, I now might decide that I was someone who could be perfectly capable of having a conversation with anyone I choose. Since nobody would know the “real” me, the way I have always been, I might feel free to be completely different.
I would push myself to experiment with new ways of being. I would sample alternative lifestyles and pretend to be a different person. I would act in unfamiliar ways just to see how it felt.
- Ø Whatever I would usually do in various circumstances, I would force myself to do the opposite. This would reinforce the idea that anything could be possible, that I could do anything I want.

2. Which do you like best?
- Ø I like travelling by bike best, because it is good exercise for me to ride a bike. Second, it doesn’t pollute the air like cars. Still another reason is that travelling on bikes sounds interesting and new because very few people can do it. The last reason is that I won’t suffer from motion sickness if I travel by bike.
- Ø I like travelling by bus best. The first reason is that it is cheap and convenient. Buses can go almost anywhere unlike planes and trains which have limited access. The second reason is that I don’t have to buy tickets beforehand. The last reason is that I can enjoy the view on the bus.
- Ø I like travelling by plane best. Planes are fast. I can fly from Taipei to Kaohsiung in one hour, which saves me a lot of time. So this is the best means of transportation when you travel alone, because when you travel alone, you usually feel lonely.
- Ø I like travelling by ship best. Because I was born in a coastal city, I am used to travelling by ship. It gives me a feeling of belonging to the seaside. I like to listen to the sound of the waves. I enjoy the view from the sea the most. Travelling by ship is slow but it’s inexpensive and interesting.

2 How do you think people can benefit from travelling?
² Man has travelled to hunt for food.
² Trade with other people.
² Explore or conquer new territories.
² Expand one’s horizons.
² Experience other cultures.
² Connect with other people — whether they are friends, relatives or business partners.
3 Where do you think people in your country like to travel nowadays? // Has it always been the same?
- Ø Well, people like to travel to be with their family. They travel to resort areas to relax in the sun; they travel to see beautiful scenery, to visit famous places, to taste different foods, and to learn new things. Nowadays, some tourists can afford to spend their vacations sightseeing in famous cities like Paris, London and Vienna, where there are innumerable beautiful historical buildings and museums to visit. Many people choose to travel to Alishan, for example, to see the extraordinary sight of the sunrise. Even more tourists visit the Sun Moon Lake in Nantou and Kenting National Park in Pingtung. Some people travel on their own and other people join a package tour. In the latter case, the tour company takes care of everything including transportation, accommodation, and the sightseeing itinerary. However, two decades ago most people in Taiwan could not afford to travel here and there. There has really been a great change in the way of life.
4 Do you think there will be any changes in people’s attitude towards tourism in your country?
- Ø In recent years, the environmental movement has sparked new trends in tourism. Instead of visiting crowded and polluted cities, many people now look for clean destinations where they can breathe fresh air and admire nature in its unspoiled state. Young families, in particular, like to go wilderness camping. They travel by canoe to remote areas in parks, sleep in tents and cook their own food on campfires. Children benefit from the healthy environment and they can see deer, rabbits, squirrels, and other wildlife in their natural surroundings.
Bird watching has also become another very popular form of tourism. People of all ages travel far and wide to see different species of birds. The results of their observations are often used to measure the effects of pollution and industrial development on the survival of various species.
9 What do you think of transformative travel? // How can it be helpful?
- Ø Well, I think it is really interesting and rewarding, and any change in life and surroundings can be beneficial. Sometimes one needs to take a transformative travel to produce change and growth. He or she should push himself to experiment with new ways of life. In some cases, making public commitments of what one intends to do will also help push him or her to go ahead without easily backing down. Yet it is too expensive, too self-centred and too time-consuming. Isolating oneself from one’s friends and family is not good, friends and family are important for one’s health and happiness.
10 Can you think of any ways to help people make changes in their lives? // Which way do you think is the most effective and economical?
² Travel to see new places, meet different people, and experience different cultures.
² Do new and different things such as sports, reading, painting, etc.
² Do things to help other people.
² Look for a new job.
² Find a hobby for fulfilling life.

Known as the temple town of Taiwan, it has a firm hold on Taiwan’s traditional culture, providing some of the best remaining examples of southern Chinese architecture in Taiwan.
