PART 1 Warm-up Question About: WORK

E = Examiner ; C = Candidate

E:   Are you currently studying or working?

C: I am working / I work.

E:   What kind of work do you do?

C: I work / am working for a computer company. I am a programmer and a system analyst. It is a very small company but it has grown / has been growing a lot in the past few years.

E:   Have you always worked for this company?

C: No, I used to work / was working as a salesman when I was at school. Of course that was a job that I took just to support myself while I was studying. After I graduated, I looked for a job in my profession and I found the one that I have now.

E:   Do you think you will keep that job?

C:   Yes, at least for some time. It is a good job and the pay is decent. But, of course, I am single now, and I don’t need too much money. Things will be different after I get married but I don’t know what I will do. Perhaps there will be / is a way for me to advance within my present company and get a higher salary. If so, I don’t see any reason why I would / should leave my job, unless I found / find better opportunities somewhere else.

E:   And, have you always lived in Taipei?

C:   No, I used to live / was living in Taizhung before I moved here.

E:   How long has it been?

C:   I have been living / have lived in Taipei for two years now. I moved here just after graduating.

E:   But you expect to move again, do you?

C:   Well, yes, if I do well in my IELTS, I will have / have a good chance to move to Australia.

E:   Do you think your life will be different there?

C: I am sure it will be.

E:   How?

C: Well, I think that life will be much more competitive there. Maybe I will have to fight to get and keep a job. But I expect that, in general, my life will improve. I will make more money and I will have things that are difficult to get in Taiwan, like a car, a house and, hopefully a big bank account.

E:   So, how do you imagine your life ten years from now?

C:   First of all, I will have a family with, I hope, two children. Then I expect that I will work in my own company and will not be dependent on anybody. But, if I am / were not able to start a company, that will not be / would not be a big problem as long as I have / had a well paying job. In general, I hope I will be living a comfortable life.
