今天就來學10組好用的英文成語,有機會表現時才不會「書到用時方恨少」唷 (看吧,馬上用上成語了J)


1)    Don’t judge a book by its cover. 以書比喻人,表示:別以貌取人

Ex: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Mike may look laid back, but he’s actually a very ambitious person.

別以貌取人。邁克可能看起來悠哉(懶散),但他實際上是個雄心勃勃的人。


2) To Crack a nut with a sledgehammer (= jackhammer): to apply too much force to achieve something. 浪費力氣,類似中文成語:殺雞用牛刀

Ex: I think that he cracked a nut with a sledgehammer by trying to find the place on his own, instead of asking for directions.

我覺得他試圖自己找路而不問他人,真是浪費力氣。

 

3) The Cream of the crop = The Crème de la crème: top people人中之龍

Ex: Students at elite schools are often considered the cream of the crop.

精英學校中的學生常被認為是人中之龍(=最棒的)

 

4) Cream rises to the top.: a good person or idea will not go unnoticed for long. 表示:優秀的人事終究會被發覺。

Ex: Don’t worry. Cream rises to the top. Your boss will eventually see your efforts.

不要擔心。你的老闆終究會看到你的努力。

 

5) To not cut the mustard: to fail to perform at the required level無法勝任某事

Ex: Jack got fired because he couldn’t cut the mustard.

傑克因為無法勝任被解僱。

6) A different kettle of fish: something totally different from other things.

Ex: Don’t try to change the subject. This is a different kettle of fish.

不要試圖改變話題。這是另一碼事。

 

7) To dine on ashes: to focus on the past.活在過去

Ex: She always dines on ashes by regretting things that cannot be reversed.

她總是活在過去,後悔那些無法改變的事情。

 

8) Don’t cry over spilt milk.= It’s no use crying over spilt milk.: What happened cannot be undone. 覆水難收

Ex: The mistake already happened. I think it’s better to move on, instead of crying over spilled milk.

錯誤已發生。覆水難收,我認為最好向前走。

 

9) To Drop like a hot cake: something rejected very fast 表示某事被拒絕的速度極快

Ex: The idea was dropped like a hot cake, never to be discussed again.

那主意急速被拒絕,永遠不會再被討論。

 

10) Duck soup: something is very easy 表示某事易如反掌。

Ex: To a smart person like Joe, learning algebra is like duck soup.

對喬這種聰明的人,學習代數簡直易如反掌。
